Capitec Bank Holdings Ltd is a retail bank with over 850 branches in South Africa. Opening on March 31, 2001, its services aim to address customers’ needs for: 

  • Savings: Capitec allows customers to receive and store funds. 
  • Credit: It provides customers with access to funds and the opportunity to borrow them. 
  • Transactions: The bank enables payments and the movement of funds. 

Besides being a retail bank, Capitec also operates as a business bank, personal bank, and insurance business. More than two-thirds of its total revenue comes from net interest income. 

In 2024, Capitec acquired Avafin Holding Ltd., an international consumer lending group online. 

How to Buy Shares at Capitec 

If you want to buy Capitec shares, you’ll need to use platforms like EasyEquities, which is integrated as a widget in the Capitec Bank app. 

Step 1: Register Your Account 

Existing EasyEquities users can simply link their accounts, while new users need to register using the widget. 

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register: 

  1. Download the app and activate the EasyEquities widget 
  2. Once downloaded, sign into your account 
  3. Tap Explore 
  4. Click the Live Better tab 
  5. Select EasyEquities 
  6. Tap Add and enter your details 

Step 2: Fund Your Account 

Once you set up and verify your account, the next step to knowing how to buy shares at Capitec is to fund your account. Different account types require different steps to follow. Below are the steps you need to take per account: 

ZAR Account 

  1. Tap My Funds 
  2. Click Transfer Funds 
  3. The “From” account should be the savings account or flexible savings plan. The “To” account should be EasyEquities ZAR 
  4. Enter the amount and click Immediate Transfer or Transfer 
  5. Confirm the transfer on the dialog present 
  6. Tap Done 
  7. Click My Funds 
  8. Select Transfer Funds 

Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) 

  1. Select EasyEquities ZAR as the “From” account and EasyEquities TFSA as the “To” account 
  2. Enter the amount you’ll transfer and select Immediate Transfer or Transfer 
  3. Click the agreement tick box and tap Accept 
  4. Confirm the transfer on the dialog presented 
  5. Tap Done 
  6. Choose My Funds 
  7. Click Transfer Funds 

USD Account 

  1. Select EasyEquities ZAR as the “From” account and EasyEquities USD as the “To” account 
  2. Enter the amount you’ll transfer and select Transfer 
  3. The EasyFX transfer screen will then show the exchange rate. 
  4. Select Continue 
  5. Tap Confirm 

Step 3: Make Your First Investment 

Once your funds are in your account, you’re ready to invest in the Capitec app. 

Investing through EasyEquities is a straightforward process. After you find the investment that you want, enter the amount you wish to invest, and that’s it!

  1. Tap Invest 
  2. Click Portfolio to filter the list by account (ZAR, USD, or TFSA) 
  3. Tap Investment Type to filter the list further by the type of investment, which includes Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs), and Equities. 
  4. Click Category to filter the list by the category that the investment is in. 
  5. Choose the investment you want to buy so you can view the details 
  6. Tap Buy 
  7. Enter the purchase amount and then tap Next 
  8. After you view the summary, tap Immediate Buy or Buy 
  9. Confirm your purchase on the dialog presented 
  10. Tap Done

Yes! If you haven’t updated to the new app yet, follow this step-by-step guide on how to activate the Capitec app without needing to go to the bank: 

  1. Open the old app and verify your email address. (Note: this is crucial for the remote onboarding process to work) 
  2. Search for “Capitec Bank” in your Android, iOS, or Huawei app store 
  3. Install and open the new Capitec app 
  4. Click I have a savings account 
  5. Enter your savings account number 
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions 
  7. Delete or uninstall the old app 

Once you finish installing the new app, you can use it to reset your forgotten remote app PIN without needing to visit a branch. 

How do I open a Capitec account? 

Steps to open a Capitec account: 

  1. Make sure you have: 
    • A smartphone 
    • Your SA ID number 
    • A valid email address and SA cellphone number 
  2. Download the Capitec app 
  3. Take a few selfies to create a biometric signature. 
  4. Enter your SA ID number and personal information. 
  5. Wait for your card to be delivered 

Once you have opened an account, you can start using the app for banking or shopping while waiting for your physical card. Alternatively, you can collect your card at the nearest branch to you. 

How can I send money using the new app? 

Follow these steps on how to transfer money using the Capitec app: 

  1. Tap Transact 
  2. Click the button to send cash 
  3. Select “From” account 
  4. Enter the amount you wish to send 
  5. Create a 4-digit code (which the recipient will use to collect the money) 
  6. Tap Send 
  7. Read the terms and conditions, then tick the boxes and click Accept 
  8. Click Yes to confirm the transaction 
  9. On the successful screen of the Send cash transaction, tap the Share Reference Number button to share the reference number through your preferred messaging platform (e.g., WhatsApp) 
  10. Send the code to the recipient in a private message
